How high elf names are built
High elf names here come from 42 starts and 72 endings with a formal, ceremonial feel: crown, star, tower, sacred, radiant. This page defaults to Long, so most names have 5 to 6 syllables. Switch to Medium if you need something quicker to say.
A few high elf parts. The starts carry most of the ceremony; the endings decide whether the name feels stately or soft.
| Part | Position | Say it | Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ela | Start | el-uh | star |
| Tael | Start | tayl | (describes) gleaming |
| Era | Start | air-uh | (describes) first |
| Ves | Start | ves | dusk |
| -al | Middle | al | swan |
| -ra | Middle | rah | (describes) ruling |
| -wyn | Ending | win | (describes) blessed |
| -indra | Ending | in-druh | (describes) fair |
| -or | Ending | or | lord |
| -ithel | Ending | ith-el | star |
A worked example
Ilthiaeris is a high elf name built from 3 parts. Each part has its own respelling and gloss, and together the glosses make its constructed meaning.
Ilthiaeris
ILTH-ee-uh-air-is, 5 syllables
| Part | Say it | Gloss |
|---|---|---|
| Ilth | ilth | crystal |
| ia | ee-uh | graceful |
| eris | air-is | quiet |
Meaning (constructed): Graceful, quiet crystal
Read the parts left to right: describing words come first, then the thing named, which is how Ilthiaeris gets its meaning. The homepage walks through the full method.
High elves in D&D and elsewhere
In the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons rules, high elves are one of three elven lineages. The rules describe them as having "been infused with the magic of crossings between the Feywild and the Material Plane" (species descriptions, AideDD).
That magical, courtly flavor is why the high elf tables here use longer parts and more titles. The family names follow suit: house names are built from two formal parts, and translated names read like heraldry.
| Family name | Say it | In Common |
|---|---|---|
| Lyrellin | LEER-el-in | Harpmirror |
| Delaithil | DEL-uh-ith-il | Highmoon |
| Aerellin | AIR-el-in | Sunmirror |
| Maearil | MAY-ar-il | Silvercrown |
| Glimmermantle | plain English | Glimmer + mantle |
| Lightsinger | plain English | Light + singer |
| Everspire | plain English | Ever + spire |
| Swanwing | plain English | Swan + wing |

Questions people ask
What are good high elf names?
Longer names with a stately meaning fit the type. If the full name feels like a mouthful at the table, keep it for formal moments and give the character a short nickname from the first part.
Why are these names so long?
This page starts on the Long setting, which adds two middle parts. Change Length to Medium or Short and generate again for shorter names.
Do high elves have family names?
In many settings they do, and they're often tied to a noble house. This page gives you a house name with its meaning in Common, or a translated English name. Set Show to First only to skip it.
How do I say these names?
Read the respelling under each name. The capitalized chunk is the stressed one, and each hyphen marks a new syllable.
