How elf last names are built
Family names come in two styles. A house name joins two parts from the elf type's own surname tables, and the translation underneath shows what it means in Common. A translated name skips the Elvish and gives you a plain English compound, the way a family might be known to outsiders.
Each elf type has its own house tables, so wood elf houses sound leafy, high elf houses sound formal, and most drow houses put an apostrophe between their parts.
| Part | Position | Say it | Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bry | House start | bree | briar |
| Hol | House start | hol | holly |
| broth | House ending | broth | brook |
| iel | House ending | ee-el | song |
| Cal | House start | kal | crown |
| Lua | House start | loo-uh | moon |
| amar | House ending | ah-mar | house |
| oneth | House ending | on-eth | tower |
| Xun | House start | zoon | silent |
| Ulv | House start | oolv | spider |
| 'thra | House ending | thrah | thorn |
| 'ul | House ending | ool | depth |
A worked example
Here's one high elf house name split into its two parts.
Ilthivel
ILTH-iv-el
Ilth (crystal) · ivel (gem)
In Common: Crystalgem
The translation simply joins the two glosses into one word, which is how a lot of fantasy family names read in English.
Do elves have last names in Tolkien?
Not in the way we use surnames. Tolkien's elves are mostly known by a single name, sometimes with a father-name or a house attached. When Gildor meets the hobbits in The Fellowship of the Ring, he introduces himself as "Gildor Inglorion of the House of Finrod," and Inglorion is a patronymic meaning "son of Inglor" (Encyclopedia of Arda).
Games and other settings often do give elves family names, which is where this page comes in. If you're writing in a Tolkien-style world, try a father-name or a house instead of a modern surname.
| Elf type | House names | Translated names |
|---|---|---|
| Wood elf | Caelethel, Saeldorn, Oladal | Mossbrook, Leafbow, Rainleaf |
| High elf | Thaeastar, Ylaoneth, Luaethen | Moonkeep, Everbloom, Morningbloom |
| Drow | Xun'ith, Sza'ess, Ghil'driel | Hushveil, Silentfang, Gloomwhisper |

Questions people ask
Do elves have last names in The Lord of the Rings?
Not modern surnames. Elves there are usually known by one name, sometimes with a father-name or house. Gildor calls himself Gildor Inglorion of the House of Finrod, and Inglorion means son of Inglor.
What are good half-elf last names?
A human family name if the character grew up among humans, or an elven house name if they grew up on the elven side. The half-elf name generator mixes both.
What's the difference between a house name and a translated name?
A house name is in the elves' own style, with its meaning shown in Common. A translated name is the English version, the way neighbors or adventuring companions might say it.
