How these names are built
Every first name here is put together from small parts: a start, sometimes a middle, and an ending. Each part was written for this site with its own short meaning and its own respelling, so the meaning and pronunciation you see come from the same pieces as the name itself.
Wood, high, and drow names use different tables; half-elf names pair one of those with a human or dwarven name. Wood elf parts lean on plants, water, and animals. High elf parts run longer and more formal. Drow parts use harder consonants, and most drow family names carry an apostrophe.
| Part | Position | Say it | Means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dar | Start | dar | oak |
| Cor | Start | kor | heart |
| -ia | Ending | ee-uh | dew |
| -mir | Ending | meer | gem |
| Ilm | Start | ilm | (describes) ancient |
| Faen | Start | fayn | summer |
| -essa | Ending | ess-uh | (describes) noble |
| -oth | Ending | oth | (describes) resolute |
| Ilv | Start | ilv | web |
| Ush | Start | oosh | (describes) hushed |
| -eth | Ending | eth | (describes) sly |
| -ezz | Ending | ez | (describes) stinging |
Length controls how many middle parts get added. Short is a start plus an ending, Medium adds one middle, and Long adds two. Each result shows its syllable count, so you can see the setting working.
A worked example
Haemiavel is a wood elf name built from 3 parts. Each part has its own respelling and gloss, and together the glosses make its constructed meaning.
Haemiavel
HAY-mee-ah-vel, 4 syllables
| Part | Say it | Gloss |
|---|---|---|
| Hae | hay | hawk |
| mi | mee | small |
| avel | ah-vel | hazel |
Meaning (constructed): Small hazel of the hawk
Describing words go first, then the last thing named, then "of the" and any other things named. The parts are joined and only the first letter is capitalized; if two identical vowels would meet, or a meaning would repeat itself, the name is re-rolled. The respelling is the parts' own respellings joined with hyphens, with the stress on the first chunk.

Questions people ask
Is this generator AI?
No. Some people call this an elvish name generator or an elf name maker, but whatever you call it, there's no AI model behind it. Your browser picks parts at random from tables written by hand for this site, joins them, and checks the result against a few filters. The names you generate and type stay in your browser.
Do I need an account?
No. Everything runs in your browser. If you save names, they're kept in your browser's local storage on this device, and you can clear them any time from the Saved names panel.
Do elf names have to mean something?
Not at all. Plenty of people pick a name for its sound. The meaning is there if you want a reason behind the name, for a backstory or a book, and you can ignore it otherwise.
Are these real Elvish words?
No. The meanings here are constructed for this site and labeled that way. They aren't translations from Tolkien's languages or any other real or invented language. The elven names with meanings guide explains the difference.
Can I use these names in my game or book?
Yes. The names are generated for you to use. Before you publish, it's still worth a quick search to make sure a name isn't already a well-known character somewhere else.
