Elven Name Generator ("we," "us," or "our") operates elvennamegenerator.com. This page explains what information is collected when you use this site, why, and what you can do about it. The short version: the generators run in your browser, there are no accounts, no cookies, and no ads, and the only analytics we run is a cookieless, self-hosted tool designed to count visits without identifying you.

Information we collect

  • Server logs: like nearly every website, our web host records standard request logs. These can include your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the time, and the referring site. We use them only to keep the site running and secure.
  • Names you type into the tools: the generators run entirely in your browser. Names you type, such as in the Christmas, Elf on the Shelf, or name builder tools, are never sent to us or stored.
  • Visit statistics: we use Umami, a privacy-focused analytics tool that we host ourselves on a server with our web host. When a page loads, it records the page viewed, the referring site, your device type, browser, and operating system, and an approximate location (country, region, and city). Umami doesn't use cookies, and we use these numbers only in aggregate, to see which pages and tools people find useful. The names you generate, type, or save are not sent to it.
  • Saved names: if you press Save on a name, it's stored in your own browser's local storage on your device. We can't see it. You can remove it with Clear saved on any generator or by clearing this site's data in your browser.
  • Contact form and email: if you send a message, we receive the name, email address, subject, and message you enter so we can reply. Please don't include sensitive personal information.

What we don't do

  • We don't set cookies.
  • We don't run advertising or third-party tracking scripts, and our analytics don't use cookies or follow you to other sites.
  • We don't sell or share personal information, and we don't use it for targeted advertising.
  • We don't use your information to make automated decisions about you.

Third-party services

  • Google Fonts: pages load their fonts from Google's servers, which means your browser sends Google a request that includes your IP address. See Google's privacy policy.
  • Contact form handler: messages from the contact form are processed by a form handler on readyutilities.com, which is run by the same owner as this site, and delivered by email.
  • Web hosting: the site is hosted by a commercial web host that processes server logs on our behalf.
  • Umami analytics: self-hosted on a server we run with our web host, not a third-party analytics service. See Umami's own description of how it works.
  • Links to other sites: some pages link to outside sources, such as Eldamo or Roll20. Those sites have their own privacy policies.

Why we use your information (EU and UK visitors)

If data protection law such as the GDPR or UK GDPR applies to your visit, we rely on these legal bases:

  • Server logs: our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website.
  • Contact messages: our legitimate interest in answering the message you chose to send.
  • Visit statistics: our legitimate interest in understanding, in aggregate, which pages and tools are useful.
  • Saved names: these never leave your device, and storing them is part of the feature you asked for when you pressed Save.

How long we keep it

Server logs are kept for the period our host's log rotation allows and are not used to build profiles. Contact messages are kept only as long as we need them to answer you and follow up, and you can ask us to delete them sooner.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to ask what personal information we hold about you, to get a copy, to correct it, to delete it, to object to or restrict how it's used, and to complain to your local data protection authority. Since we don't run accounts, the only personal information we're likely to hold is a contact message you sent us or a server log entry.

To make a request, email admin@readyutilities.com. We'll respond within the time the law that applies to you requires, and we won't treat you differently for asking.

California residents

We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are used in the California Consumer Privacy Act, and we don't use or disclose sensitive personal information. The categories we may collect are identifiers (IP address, and the name and email you give us if you write), and internet activity (pages viewed, in server logs and our cookieless visit statistics). You can make the requests described under Your rights by emailing us.

Children's privacy

Some pages, such as the Elf on the Shelf names, are meant for families to use together. The site doesn't ask for personal information to use any tool, isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal information from children. If you think a child has sent us personal information through the contact form, email us and we'll delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we add advertising or anything else that changes how data is handled, we'll update this policy before it goes live and name each service. The "Last updated" date at the top shows the latest revision.
