About Elven Name Generator
Who builds these free elf name generators, and how the names and meanings are made.
What this site is
Elven Name Generator is a free set of name tools for elves: wood, high, drow, and half-elf names, D&D characters, family names, and a few holiday pages for naming a household elf. Every generator gives you ten names at a time, and fantasy names come with a respelling and a meaning.
How it works
All the names are built in your browser from tables written for this site. Each table holds small parts, and each part has its own short meaning and respelling. The generator picks parts at random, joins them, and builds the meaning from the same parts, so the meaning always matches the name.
Those meanings are constructed, and every result says so. They aren't translations from Tolkien's languages or any other real or invented language. When a page quotes an attested Tolkien name, it links to the entry in Eldamo by Paul Strack, which is where those meanings come from.
There's no AI model behind the generators, no account, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Saved names stay in your own browser.
How the data is checked and kept current
Before a generated fantasy name is shown, it's checked against a list of real English words, famous character names, and a profanity filter. Lore notes on the setting pages, such as the 2024 D&D rules changes, are checked against the published source and cited on the page. When a part produces bad combinations, it's fixed in the master table and every page that uses it is rebuilt.
About the creator
Elven Name Generator was created by Cedrick Reese, founder of ReadyUtilities.com, a retired veteran and web developer who enjoys building free, user-friendly online tools that simplify everyday tasks. My journey began in the early 2000s with affiliate marketing and niche site development, which grew into a passion for creating practical digital utilities and calculators. After retiring, I earned a Computer Systems Technician certificate from UEI College, completed Electro-Mechanical Technologies at Tulsa Welding School, and finished the Carpentry program at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Today, I combine my technical background and craftsmanship by building furniture using traditional woodworking methods, gardening, and developing helpful online tools for users worldwide.
